REFLEXOLOGY IN PREGNANCY

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient complimentary and completely natural therapy. In short, it can bring about a deep state of relaxation which allows your body to rebalance itself through its own healing process. If there is an imbalance in the body, often this is felt on the feet by the reflexologist in the form of ‘crystals’. By gently massaging these crystals and breaking them down, it can unblock the energy pathways within and allow the healing to begin. Reflexology has a cumulative effect so often more than one treatment is beneficial.

Pregnancy reflexology.

Having trained in maternity reflexology, treated a lot of pregnant ladies and had it myself, reflexology during those 40 weeks can be one of the most wonderful treatments. It is a time for you to relax and for you and your baby to connect.

A qualified therapist will be able to work with you for a multitude of symptoms such as anxieties, Pelvic Girdle Pain PGP (also known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction SPD), morning sickness, general aches and pains, sleep, heartburn and so on! There are so many!

A small study which took place between July 2012 and February 2014, has shown that antenatal reflexology reduced labour duration for primiparous women who had experienced low back and / or pelvic girdle pain during their pregnancy, compared with usual antenatal care and footbaths. You can read the full article and see the link to the research here.

When can you start reflexology in pregnancy?

You can have reflexology throughout your pregnancy from day 1 to day 40 +. However, if you are going to have pregnancy reflexology in your 1st trimester, make sure they have had the additional training specifically for pregnancy. It is completely safe if they know what they are doing. If at any point you don’t feel comfortable, just stop – the point is relaxation so worrying is not what we want for you.

A lot of clients begin in their 2nd trimester through to their 4th trimester (the 1st 3 months after birth). You can see my packages available for throughout pregnancy here.

When you start to approach your due date, the treatments will change a bit from helping to ease symptoms to starting to prepare the body for the birth of your child or children.

In an ideal world, I would recommend coming every three - four weeks until 37 weeks, where I would make it weekly and possibly bi-weekly if you are past your due date. But that is in an ideal world and not possible for everyone so we would work together to figure out the best treatment plan for you, so you can maximise the reflexology treatments in your budget.

TESTIMONIAL

“I went to Jessie for a number of sessions through my pregnancy as I was not only dealing with all the usual aches and pains, but also a lot of anxiety and trouble sleeping.

After each session I felt the benefits more and more. My sleep improved immediately, and my anxiety showed definite improvement over the weeks. Jessie adapted her reflexology each time to target the areas I was feeling pain, from my ribs to my pelvis to my back. Jessie creates such a calming environment; I hugely enjoyed my sessions and look forward to going back.”
